Believe it or not, my reasoning for becoming a follower of chiropractic is due to pure fate. Only fate can allow someone to take a risk and fall in love with the result. My passion for being involved in health care began while attending middle school and continuing at Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School of Los Angeles. During my senior year at Bravo I became recognized by the state of California as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and began training at the Los Angeles County Hospital. My education continued at Hampton University of Virginia with a major in biology and a pre-physical therapy emphasis. Under the instruction of Dr. B. Shipes, I began to venture into the field of research and in the summer of 2001 joined a cancer research team of the Massachusetts General Hospital Research Division headed by Dr. R. Jain of Boston, MA. The experience at MGH helped to shine a light on the importance of healthcare as well as my passion for improving the wellness of our society, rather than simply focusing on the absence of disease. This was the moment that ignited a change in the direction as to what kind of influence my life would have on family, friends, and future patients. After doing some research, Chiropractic became very appealing to me as it upholds the standard of care I wanted to provide.
The goal was to give 100% to the Chiropractic Model of Life. Fate has brought me to not only appreciate but love this model, and in return, it has given 200%. It is truly a blessing to realize and experience what others mean when it is said that they never work a day in their life because they have a love for their profession. Before walking onto the campus of Cleveland Chiropractic College, I had never been under the care of Chiropractic and was not able to explain to the next person in detail what the profession was about aside from my own research on the subject. Realizing the power and potential, there are everyday attempts to follow this Model of Chiropractic and share it with any inquiring minds.
Education holds a majority of the substance when it comes to obtaining and maintaining optimal health and wellness. When educating patients about Chiropractic, the Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) holds a great truth. This is the belief that initially places your nervous system (Brain, Spinal Cord, and Peripheral Nerves) as the control of every aspect and function of the human body, including all things from an itch to fighting a cold and from pain to indigestion. The everyday stress of life compiled with bad posture, slips and falls, motor vehicle accidents, etc…cause the nervous system to become compromised. When compromised, the ongoing brain-body connection is cut off and therefore results in sickness, pain, or systematic malfunction. How else can the body work without proper input of instructions from the brain? I would like for you to try and perform a task on a monitor without the appropriate connection to the computer and then inform me of the results. With the VSC as a foundation, the goal of Chiropractic is to remove all negative influence and compromise to the nervous system.
I am a firm believer of the vast power and limitless capability of the mind once put to use. After completing so many years of schooling is when it dawned on me that I knew so little. The learning process has never ended and has instead become more intense on a day-to-day basis. Every day continues to provide some form of test or challenge to face, and with each task, I plan to leave a testimony. Just as fate has brought me to love this profession, faith will be the very substance that will allow me to become one of the best to ever become a part of the world of chiropractic.
